What are we learning this week?

Religion: This week we will begin Unit 2: God Made Holy Things. Chapter 1: God Made Churches. We will talk about how we can distinguish a church building from others and how we are to behave in church. We will discuss prayer and how people go to church to talk to God and this is called prayer.

Everyday Math: This week we will continue working on patterns. This week we will use beads to create patterned jewelry and we will use pattern blocks to create patterned snakes using shapes.

Jolly Phonics: This week our letters of the week Cc and Kk. We will be able to identify letter Cc and Kk, learn the sound and motion, and a chant to help us remember the sound for letters Cc and Kk. We will also complete various activities that will help us with letter recognition, and letter formation.

This is the chant for our letter of the week:

We are clicking castanets,

/k/ /k/ /k/,

We are clicking castanets,

/k/ /k/ /k/

Clicking castanets, clicking castanets, clicking castanets,

/k/ /k/ /k/.

The motion for Cc and Kk is raising hands and snapping fingers together as if playing castanets and saying /k/ /k/ /k/.

At home ask your child what the letter of the week is, its sound and motion. Ask your child to share the chant with you as well.

Reader’s Workshop: This week we are learning about schema. Schema is what we already know or the information we already have in our brains such as places you’ve been to, things you’ve done, facts you already know and books you’ve read. When we read, we activate our schema and our schema is always changing the more we read. We will use pumpkin books to use our schema and build it as well.

Writer’s Workshop: We will begin learning how to use our schema to make a connection. We will discuss what a connection is and we will make text to self connections. This is when we can relate to something that is happening in the book with something that we have experienced in our own lives.

Leader In Me: We will begin learning about Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind. We will read the Stephen Covey book When I Grow Up. When you use Habit 2 it means we have a plan. We set goals and plan ahead such as with our Wildly Important Goals.
