What is PK3 learning this week?

We have started practicing for our Nativity Play. We practice 3 times a week along with the other 2 PK classrooms. A form went home informing parents of your child’s role for the play. Please let me know if you have questions regarding costumes or the performance.

Religion: This week we will begin Unit 3: God Made the Earth. We will learn about how God made land. We are grateful and appreciative to God for the gift of land. We will review types of lands: mountains, fields, plains, and forests. We will talk about ways to take care of the Earth such as by recycling, not littering, plant flowers and not writing on walls.

Everyday Math: This week we will continue Unit 3: Operations. We will use songs and manipulatives to help us count backwards from 5 and 10.

Jolly Phonics: This week our letter of the week is Dd. We will be able to identify letter Dd, learn the sound and motion, and a chant to help us remember the sound for letter Dd. We will also complete various activities that will help us with letter recognition, and letter formation.

This is the chant for letter Dd:

See me play on my drum.

Playing drums is lots of fun,

with a /d/ /d/ /d/ /d/.

See me play upon my drum!

The motion for Dd is pretend to hold drums sticks and beat up and down on the drum.

At home ask your child what the letter of the week is, its sound and motion. Ask your child to share the chant with you as well.

Second Step/Mindfulness: This week we will be reviewing feeling happy. We will also review feeling surprised. We will talk about our facial expressions when we feel surprised, and we will share when we have felt surprised.

Reader’s Workshop: This week we are learning about Story Elements. We will talk about how authors and illustrators brainstorm story elements before they create a story. We will discuss two story elements, characters and setting. Characters and Setting go together like a puzzle piece, they fit together perfectly. We will read Wemberly Worried and will focus on characters, setting and identifying the star of the story: the main character. At home, when you read students will be able to share that the main character is the character that is seen on every page in the story and the story is mainly them.

Writer’s Workshop: This week we will be connecting SecondStep and writing. Our learning target is to draw with details that show we are surprised. Ms. Galan will share a time she felt surprised and then she will model how to draw someone who is surprised. Students will share their writing with class.

Service Learning Project: This week we will be focusing on a new community helper: Doctors. We will discuss what doctors do and our experiences. We will also create our own personal doctor bags.

Leader in Me: We will continue reviewing Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind. We will talk about goals we have for ourselves that may take steps to accomplish such as learning to ride a bike, learning to roller skate.
