We have a fun week ahead of us!  Our theme for this week is Hispanic Heritage.  Hispanic Heritage Month began 9/15 and we are focusing this week on it but will continue to read stories, hear songs, and do projects related to Hispanic Heritage throughout the month!  Our field trip to Lincoln Park Zoo is Thursday and we have no school Friday.

Here is what we are up to for the week.

Everyday Math: We are learning positional words such as on, beside, behind, over, under.  We will be using our teddy bear manipulative and singing a fun song (to the tune of Farmer in the Dell) “My teddy’s on my chair, my teddy’s on my chair, Oh dear, silly bear, my teddy’s on my chair”  We will then swap out on for different positional words.  We will move the bears according to the directions in the song.  We will also begin learning about ordinal numbers.  We will play a game lining up objects 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.

Religion: We are learning that the Church is God’s Family and that we too are a part of God’s Family.  We will be familiarizing ourselves with words like altar, vestment, etc.

Leader in Me: We will be watching the video version of the story we read last week Just the Way I Am from the Leader in Me website.

Handwriting Without Tears & Jolly Phonics:  We are practicing writing our names this week and working on our proper hand grip.  We are also looking for the first letters in our name!

Reader’s Workshop: We are learning about authors and illustrators.  We will know that authors think of the story and the words for their story and that illustrators read those words and turn them into pictures.

Writer’s Workshop: We are creating our September self portraits, focusing on including various colors in our drawings.

Second Step:  Following directions is the theme this week.  We will play Brain Builders to help us strengthen our listening muscles as well as read a book that teaches us sign language.

This week’s books are: Simple Signs, Green is a Chile Pepper, What Can You Do With a Paleta?, Frida, Tito Puente: Mambo King, Biblioburro, Cuckoo: A Mexican Folktale, Book Fiesta, Zoo Looking.
